SCRIBUS is a free, open-source, cross-platform desktop publishing application. It allows you to create professional-quality materials for your club (or any other need). It is particularly suited to anything you are having printed. Here are some of the things clubs have created with this tool:
- Newsletters
- Brochures
- Flyers
- Web graphics
- Billboards
- Banners
- Calendars
- Books or e-Books
- Letterhead
- Business Cards
WORKSHOP PREPARATION RESOURCES
To help you get the most from this short workshop, we encourage you to download and install Scribus before the session. This will let you play with it beforehand so you can bring questions to the session. You will also be able to follow along.
This workshop will use version 1.6.4, which is not the version you will see when you visit the downloads page from Scribus.net.
Because this software is available for many types of computers, there are several download “flavors” from which to choose. Click the image here to download a PDF guide to help you select the correct installation file.

SAMPLE FILES
It can be intimidating to explore with a blank canvas. To help you get started, we’ve prepared a set of sample files for you.

Click the image to download the entire set as a compressed (ZIP) folder. Extract the folder and you should see a set of color swatches that you can import as well as a flyer, brochure, set of digital graphics, and letterhead.
VIDEO RESOURCES – SCRIBUS
Here are at few videos from a longer tutorial series. The first one links to the entire playlist of tutorials.
VIDEO RESOURCES – DESIGN BASICS
Even if you have the technical skills to create PR materials, you may not feel confident about your skills as a designer. These short videos (each is under 7 minutes) teach you the basics of design so you can take your marketing to the next level.
POST-WORKSHOP SUPPORT
Use this form to request support in a more general way for any of the design tools we taught at this COT. We use the interest in these responses to plan ongoing training.
